Be honest as the checks are there for a reason. If they decide you are a risk then you’re a risk (to them).

I don’t know much about credit histories but can you put them right by paying back (and more)?

Interested to hear if insurances are invalidated based on these things.

Why I say these checks are there for a reason:

If a contractor lied on getting a job at my bank and stole all my money I’d be pissed.

If a paedo got a job at my kids school I’d be pissed.

    Etc etc

        It appears you don't indeed.

Only if you supplied false information.

He can't. It's his opinion, possibly based on a long career in banking. I've had the full check at every financial gig I've ever worked in. They wouldn't be providing due diligence if they haven't.

I wouldn't be basing any decisions on one throw away comment from a stranger on the internet just because it's what you want to hear.

            The answer is no.

But if it is some percentage maybe they will read this and make sure the ones they check are all Dave/David/Davide/etc.

Didn't pay the phone and utilities for 4 years?

Clear those down, not sure people will trust you to run a bath with them still open.

Most banks always do the Police & Credit Background checks. They sometimes skip the references stage if they need you urgently. It all depends who is doing the checks. If its the Banks HR then they will do the lot. If its an outsourcer affiliated to the recruitment agency then to get you onsite earning they will sometimes skip the references & just file them away! But its all based on demand I have worked at some very well known Investment Banks with no checks done whatsoever as they needed someone urgently.

Current gig in a bank - didn't even ask to credit check or anything else, I even chased to get written confirmation. Previous gigs in banks, have had my knicker drawer turned out.

My take is that you ought to be honest. By hiding an issue, you are proving yourself to be untrustworthy. By declaring an issue, you ought to have the opportunity to demonstrate what you're doing to resolve it. Different organisations have different views of defaults and will assess the risk differently. It also depends on what your role will be and what systems you will have access to.

We had a chap who came clean, His ex-wife 2 years after his divorced had a £508 default against a bill still in there joint names, He paid it up ASAP and it became "Satisfied" - This was after the chap had been with the bank (RBS) for 3 years already and doing great work and this was a random check.

Outcome - Not allowed to go back to his desk, escorted from the office, pass revoked, box sent for his personal belongings, called me from the pub outside

Program Director escalated with HR, HR said No exceptions he was gone............
