I hope things have changed since the 80s! It might be the posh Londoner in me but I was hoping for an airport nearby....nearby being a couple of hours which might hopefully cut down my time sitting on the train....

oof. That's hard to get to if you live in Cumbria never mind London.
It's in the bottom left corner and the roads to it are pretty awful (although they're being upgraded to dual carriageway).
It's gonna be a 6 hour drive (unless you go in the middle of the night), or a 4 hour train journey.
Best to stay over.

If you've never been to Cumbria it's very beautiful, and very wet (it's called the lake district rather than the crater district).

Should you do it? That's up to you.

Yep Manchester airport would be 2 hours by train. You could probably do just over 3 and a half hours from euston

i saw a train that was 3:34 all in probably thanks to a lucky connection.. The train to Barrow will show anyone from down south how the other half lives - the decent northern trains have been nicked by Chiltern Line.

Spent a while there last year, its in the arse end of no where, driving is the best bet, some go by train but as there are a lot of contractors on the site there is a mass exodus on a Thursday (Friday is a lunch time finish so most do the 5 days over 4).

BAE have their own Airport at Walney Island, flights to Bristol and Farnbourough daily, usually only for permies though but you might be able to get on it.
