Locum posts that last more than 3 years.

Hello

I've just found this forum, and joined up in the hope of obtaining some guidance.

I've worked with a local authority for over three years in the same post.
My contract is renewed every six months.

TBH, I get paid a lot more than the regulars. I even get to attend meetings, training/etc as
I have been there for so long.

I was speaking with friends over the weekend, some of whom are locums in social services like me, but none had
worked continuously in the same post for more than 18 months.

My stint of three years at social services for adults, is this a record, or do you know of any
councils that employ locums, same locums in the same posts for many years continuously.

A work's colleague was saying to me last week that I should apply for the permanent post. I'm not sure if she was being sarcastic or serious as most in my profession will know that as a locum I get paid loads of money.

I must be costing the council a lot more than permanent staff. I know I'm good at what I do, but there a others that are as good at what they do.

As I'm feeling a bit guilty, ho can this council justify the extra expense? Having said that, the mangers keep me on my toes and about every six months talk about, "doing away with locums," but thankfully they have kept me and others have come and gone

The reason to go permanent is for the pension. This is the same reason why the LA doesn't want you to go permanent.

I'm afraid that you probably won't find a locum (or someone who knows a locum) on this forum. This forum is for IT contractors.

We get the occasional locum who comes to ask a question, gets an answer, and leaves.

But we are contractors, and your question will get an answer that works in your specialism as much as ours.

We have contractors who have been with the same client for more than 3 years, maybe even one or two who work for public sector clients, as you do.

Locums

Our medical team look after a number of locums and consultants, some of them have been in situ for a number of years but most tend to move around. They're not looked after within my own team but I'm told those that hand around for a few years eventually end up on the payroll.

I worked in the NHS and dealt with lots of Locum doctors and consultants on contracts, many of them had been there for years, and like you had become part of the furniture, basically working like all the other employee's,

I think Consultants tend to get away with working at the same place because they can take their specific skills to other hospitals and you cannot easily just find someone else with those skills, unlike a locum doctor who's skills are more broad, who is just filling the gap a permanent member of staff should/could be doing

These are the people the goverment were jumping up and down about last year when it started coming out about the overtime payments and the amount these "temp resources" are getting paid.

Its' worse than that for Locums. There are plenty of articles painting a fairly bleak picture WRT locums already. Here is a pretty straight to the point one with Kate Cottrell herself replaying. The OP moves around gigs and she believes he is still caught let alone 3 years and being part and parcel.
