I'm curious to know what checks are carried out before a contract is started at Barclays? Is there a standard check that they do? If you have worked there before what was the process?

Nearly all IBs carry out something similar, or their agencies do.
If its Barclays go for a decent rate, it will probably be cut a month, or so, down the line anyway. The Chunt of Chunts. -
Consider yourself on the market until you're sat at your desk working. I've still got an outstanding offer from 2012 that they haven't sent the contract over for
As MMM says, go in at 10-15% more than you'll want because you'll get chopped in a few months (check the egos contractor cuts website).
General checks for all banks are comprehensive - passport or driving licence and birth certificate, company registration docs, VAT certificate, DBS check, etc.
Some of it you have to provide, other items they have a team that checks. The greatest trick the devil ever pulled was convincing the world that he didn't existComment

Minimum will be:
Police background checks
Credit vetting checks
Previous employment background checks/references
Provide at least 3 years bank statements & credit card statement maybe even mortgage statements
Original Passport, driving licence & utility bills which you need to present in person usually not by post
If you fail the police or credit checks forget it they will not usually proceed. If you have specific credit issues they will also probably most likely fail you.
It all depends on the role though how deep they want to go. Anything front office/trade floor will require everything. Other less business critical roles will most likely do police & credit vetting & provide a original few documents then after a few weeks wait they will claim they did other checks but in reality they are just keeping you waiting as I have heard of people who failed some banks get into Barclays in non front office roles.
This is all dependent on how fast they need you as well its rare but not unknown to just hire & fastrack you on site. I would still look around until you get a start date as Barclays have also messed contractors around & either the budget got pulled & or they changed their minds & got an internal candidate to cross train instead (that happens a lot recently in some banks they transfer a resource they already have to save the budget despite telling you the contract is yours!).Comment

I look forward to your all knowing and likely sarcastic and unhelpful reply.

As others have outlined, there are certain standard compliance checks that need to be undertaken and they seem pretty intrusive but give it a couple of hours of your time and for your part they are out of the way.
I'd go back tomorrow if the role was as interesting as the previous two.Comment
