I doubt that, why would an agent go through the hassle of all this unless he was getting something out of it. Maybe the agent is on a fixed margin and client probably meant £40/hr for candidate and didn't mention the agent's fixed part

Sounds like agent was on a big fishing trip with the £50 offer... If £40 isn't enough then tell them to shove it and move on... or better still... Make sure the contract has a small notice period and keep looking while doing this gig....

The pimp is doing it for the love of it! (I mean c'mon if the OP believes that the pimp is getting diddly squat he needs to wise up fast...).

This is where contacting the client get's very messy. You shouldn't be doing it and discussing the agents business. If you do you've got to at least understand the model so you can interpret the information being given. It would be incredibly stupid of HR to have given you the rate the agent is on, personally I think it's pretty daft HR have spoken to you at all, but they have and you need to understand what they are telling you.

Agent working for no commission... You really think this is the case???

For a 20% difference in what I'd been told and submitted at versus what I'd been offered, I'd risk contacting the client, especially if the 20% is a deal-breaker. For 10% or less, I wouldn't bother, I'd just make the decision and make sure the notice period was 1 week as there's already trust issues there.

Not necessary bluffing. The chances are you you'll say no to the price you will not get the gig.
The main question is : is this role exclusive to the agent or no? if it is then no chances.

No they use two different agencies. Contract is for big engineering firm in oil and gas sector and the project they have would last till 2022 but initial contract length is 6 months.

Pimp knew this all along and lied to get you to interview maybe? Thinking they could talk you down afterwards.

Oh well, least you know the score now... Take it or leave it?

That would depend on how realistic the rate was. If this is the best rate the OP's ever seen so he's gotten over eager (which I am reading in to all this) then I wouldn't.

If the rate was market and the new one is below market then maybe......

                      Hence "deal-breaker".

Working in London for a net take home less than a local gig would be a deal-breaker for most unless the warchest is bare.
