I live in the south west, as a software dev/architect. Previous gig ended when a project finished, there was supposed to be a phase 2 but it was delayed, then funding was postponed due to covid so they canned me. After being canned I was fortunately able to do some work for another client I used to work with, but they are switching to perm and keen to ditch me in favour of paying less. Why they'd immediately can me without the new hires in place yet is a mystery, as they don't have any other resource to work on the project so its been stalled for a year. Then again this has happened at a few gigs, where all contractors suddenly get cut due to hiring perm guys before the perm guys have even started. And in every instance it has been an utterly bad idea to have done so.

Other problem is, the work there is absolutely atrocious, if I were perm I'd walk out on day one. It's messing with my mental health, the combination of utterly tedious work and micromanagement (or rather, micro-supervision I guess you'd call it) checking in to see how I'm doing sometimes twice per day despite the fact I'm working down a list of outstanding tasks for the project, checking them off, and all my code commits are visible. Feels like the recently appointed manager there feels he has to do something to justify his job.

I think they're in for a bit of a surprise. I'll keep things amiable though, the pay is a good rate especially now that I don't have to travel all the way to taunton lol.

I keep having call from recruiters telling me within the first 30s of the call the max rate. Its like

"the client can pay a max of £350, can you take it?"

Of course I said no. Then of course nothing happens. Looks like load of cheeky clients try to get the rate as low as possible and see who can take it.

I'm sure many do. Thats how i stay so long on the bench

First rule of a sales call disqualify quickly so you don't waste time and move on to the next call.

The rate (and it's the same as occurred back in the early 00s) is what it is so the agent is simply filtering out anyone not interested.

Your problem is that the agent will find a lot of suitable people desperate enough to accept that rate and he will then start to call other potential clients saying I have great people willing to work for £350 a day creating a new market rate.

Is more likely what they will say to the clients. Always think of maximising the agent margins.

How come we're getting cheaper years after years? Its no longer worthwhile to work in IT anymore below a certain rate

Is there a thought to accepting the low rate for three months and, once in and indispensable, negotiate up?

I have said yes to £350 rates and even then nothing happens, so it's not just your saying no that leads to nowt.

                      Dilema

Finished last contract in end of June. Been trying for perm and contract after few failed attempts landed a perm job ( half the pay of contract earning) and signed the paper work last week. Then got a contract offer a day later. Rate is not the pre covid rate but outside IR35 and it's till the end of the year.
Now i'm not sure what to do take the perm offer and wait till the pandemic is over ? or take the contract and work till end of the year.
                      Advice pls..
Both roles are remote so can't compare the distance.
i'm not sure if i can pull out of the perm after signing the papers

To those who are looking for jobs.. I gave up multiple times after 2 contract offers fell through and for one perm role they kept dragging their feet plus multiple rejections and hours spend on doing the take home exercises and codility/hackerrank etc tests.
Don't give up there is something out there might not be ideal but will help to keep afloat.
