Yes it does. If they don't give all contractors mobile phones then they are treating you like an employee so you have an IR35 flag against you. Better to just use your own. You are business in your own right so not unreasonable to expect you to provide your own phone. It's just easier to carry one phone about at as well.

Not suggesting you start using it like a permie and using it for personal calls. That is probably a bit too much.
    Probably???

Do you also refuse to use the phone that they may place on your desk? do you look at it, fold your arms and say I'm not a permie so I'm not using your permie phone?

End of the day, its no big deal. Pick your battles. In my experience, contractor who plays silly buggers and acts like an awkward git (FOR NO GOOD REASON - this bit is important!) ends up completely outside IR35 with no contract.
It's not being an awkward git. You just use your own. The client is very unlikely to give a toss either way unless they insist on you using their mobile... like they do the permies....

But no my phone is personal. Looked into business tariffs and it was not worth the tax savings or hassle.
When was that? Some of the tariffs are now the same and I've a feeling my business with offers was better than the personal rates at the time. I haven't checked for awhile though. Worth another look if it's been a while.

Like I said, I have no issues using my own phone. Neither do I want to have two.
BUT if client really has the idea in their head - what do you do.

Probably about 18 months since last contract started. I'll check then - maybe its better now. That last time it seemed like they added £5-£10 a month to the same personal tariff and called it a business tariff.

You grow a pair. As I stated earlier I have worked with 5 consultancies that suggested this, I simply said I'm contactable on my own phone.
If you have an imagination you can make up any excuse you like.......

              Oh...hang on.......

If nothing else the hassle of carrying 2 phones around would be enough for me to insist they can keep their blackberry!

Does your client know this is your setup? Had a client throw the teddy out of the cot big-time with contractors forwarding desk and mobiles to personal ones once. Was awhile ago though so things may have changed making this a non issue nowadays.

I check my tariff every year - though I'm SIM only.

You can get the same tariffs for EE and O2 if you upgrade at unpopular times of the year.

Also if you ask for your PAC they can offer you a retention tariff which may be the same or cheaper than the other operator you are going to.
