Whinging on about privacy and wanting to know who to challenge/sue, don't forget "I know my rights" and "why don't you ask foreigners the same question?".

As them why they want this in writing explaining as a self employed individual this request is highly unusual especially as a DBS check will prove if you have been imprisoned.

Then if they give you a good reason get a DBS certificate. It can take 3-6 weeks.

There are plenty of legit reasons why you didn't work for 3 months and some can be personal.

thanks all - nothing to hide ... obviously. Just have no great desire to share how and where i spend my own time for no good reason. Personally i dont see that as unreasonable but heyho. Clearly the firm will be doing criminal checks anyway, and not sure how a dover calais ticket proves or disproves anything these days!

I'm 12 years contracting in FS (mix of AMs and IBs, currently IB). Guess i just got lucky.

Current arrangement at the same firm is through a consultancy and guess what no need to evidence the break, though perhaps the bar is lower. Seems rather inconsistent though.

We'll see what their default response is. I may be able to stretch to a couple of unattributeble photos.

        Cheers.

Totally usual when engaged through a consultancy, its one of the reasons IBs use them so they can be on site straight away.

I must admit I'm surprised you haven't come across this before, I have had to do it for all 5 IBs I have worked with.

Its been a couple of years since i was direct, so looks like things have tightened up a bit. Surprised that the consultancy isnt required to follow the same level of internal checking as prescribed to direct contractors (they were still very comprehensive, just didnt have this frankly silly reqt). Maybe one of those procurement/HR inconsistencies.

Correct. The onus is then on the consultancy to take the hit if person proves dodgy.

                Yep, great isn't it .

When I arrived at Client Co, through a consultancy, I started the next day.
I still provided the info, but, I assume the clearance was done while I was already working.

When direct / agency contractors are used it takes 5 weeks, before they can start.

Supposing you had spend the three months lounging at home doing nothing. What evidence of that would the investment bank expect to see?

                      Exactly.

I like motorcycle touring for three months at a time. Flexible and long holidays are part of the reason I took up contracting, more so than money.

If my LTD was not dormant, I did not take a break in employment.

A DBS requires the client/agency to go through an umbrella (less than 300 I believe) or register and actually do some admin. Showing some arbitrary proof of where you were for three months is nonsense.
