How can you sign to exclusively be represented to a ClientCo without knowing who they are?

    Hogwash.
    I'm a smug bastard.

Tell them to send you an email with the role details - company and contract ref - and you will sign exclusivity for that role. Don't limit yourself to a single agency for a clientco, just have a single relationship on a clientco/agency/contract basis as a general rule (PSL issues aside).

I had one agent did this all the time, when pushed they would give you a vague location, e.g. "between Leicester and Nottingham" when the location was the outskirts of Leicester.
They also did this to tie me to them, but didn't actually put my CV forward.

6 weeks later I got a different role at that client through another agent. When the first one heard, they threatened to sue me. I pointed out that they gave a vague location, refused to give the client name, didn't come back to me about the role and didn't even submit my CV.

If they want exclusivity, you should only sign if the agreement names the client and the role, and then give them a 2 week (or similar) time limit on exclusivity. If they don't get you an interview in that time, then you are free to approach through another agent.

The sad thing is one of the main reasons they wont give the clients name until they have your CV is because other agents try get the information and then go to the client to try and sell their services. We just have to deal with the fall out. Very annoying.

I would extend that agreement, to the effect, that they also have to be on the PSL for this to be agreement to be binding.

I see a lot of people saying give them limited exclusivity, but surely if you say you have even 7 days then it's usually too late and the role is gone.

How would you know the roles gone, and would you apply direct after this time? I can't really figure out what the best approach is.

Exclusivity is for the agent to protect him from other agencies. It doesn't mean you can they apply direct (in the very rare instance this is even possible) the agent will still have dibs on you which the client is most likely going to honour for an easy life.
