Manager? are you sure you aren't just a disguised employee?

I usually ask the agent about 6-4 weeks before, they still failed to get it done in time, lucky I was on holiday really.

def don't play it cool.....well for me I always ask out right about a month before, and I also start looking as well, so I have the choice not to renew.

Why nudge? "Will you be extending my contract on the 31st of November?" isn't going to offend anyone.

Email is easy to ignore. Speak to him, get straight to the point and confirm your understanding of the conversation by email.

6 weeks before, start hunting as insurance at 4.

            Absolute bulltulip.

Depends on industry. If you take banking, for example, it takes 4-5 weeks to get security clearance.
If you start looking 6 weeks before, you can get the role lined up and have the clearence done, before finishing the last role.

People do it all the time.

Go talk to him/her in person first. You are building a trust based relationship here.

It would offend pedants everywhere. There isn't a 31st of November.
