Aye, depends on the industry then it seems.

Clients tend to be dumb and disorganised, many roles I've been told we MUST have someone who can start immediately, and they rule out people that can't start in 1-2 days, only to then choose someone and tell them actually we can't get ready for another week because HR upon hearing that we're having a new starter in 1 day kick off having not been told anything about it before

So you need to be available immediately to get the job but won't start immediately. This is a repeated pattern
Unless you're the lead dog, the scenery never changes.

Currently 10+ contracts available in your area

I spoke to the guy responsible for agreeing the extension and once I'd got his verbal confirmation I got the agent to get it sorted.

A week later and it's still not done...

Get your agent to do the donkey work for you, after all they have to earn their commission and its in their best interests if no renewal is imminent then they can start looking at placing you to a new client site.....

True, the clients needs are usually hindered by compliance and / or HR wherever you go.

.....and this is a big warning sign that the contract is going to be a mixture of get ready and wait, with intense fire fighting.

(FWIW I will make sure that within 2 days of interview a contract start date is agreed or I walk. This worked particularly well in my favour when signed up for a contract in Kenya. It took 2 months to sort out the necessary visas & clearance during which time I did back to back all inclusive holidays in resorts in Aruba (where my previous contract was) while sending in timesheets for doing nothing more than reading occasional "background material" the clientco would conjure up.

I was also lucky enough to be part of the BNF debacle in the 90s where it was decided to keep 200 of us on would be a better idea than going through a recruitment drive again to rebuild the project team when the project was delayed. After about 6 months of showing up to an office to play Quake and drink cups of tea most of us drifted off to more challenging roles)

We've interviewed 6 people and two of them have us 4 weeks and went in the bin.

Feel free to try, you might get lucky but you're going to lose some billing days for it.
Exactly. Really stupid to waste time at interview and then drop one month hoping its going to be ok.

                      I'd say 9/10 you're on a non-runner there.
