                We get special numbers to call to get through to HMRC, answered much quicker with more knowledgeable staff apparently. It's helped us no end but I get the impression it's just made things worse when the public try and call.

                    The numbers are on the HMRC website but they'll just hang up if you aren't an agent unfortunately so it is only useful if your accountant rings up for you.
