Bankruptcy etc

Hi, First post..

I was a contractor for many years and also worked for the bank that RBS took over.. ABN AMRO for 10 years.. I fell into some difficulty with my marriage/drink and ended up with a criminal record (nearly 6 years ago) and going bankrupt 2 years ago and discharged after 6 months.

I have been offered a job potentially back at what is now RBS by my old boss.. I am 5 years dry now!! He asked me to do some research on PE-Kroll as he doesn't know exactly what they check for..

He gave me the agency that he uses and has 20+ employees through them, I have emailed them with limited disclosure (i.e. I don't need to go into gory details but give the records) but with honesty as that's what my program dictates I should do. I haven't had any response from them yet after 2 weeks!! Although they don't know that jobs are not open posted yet.

What is the general consensus on here... Is it worth going through the interview process to test it out? in the last few years (3) I went back to Uni as I was getting well again and gained a 1st BSc(Hons) in Computer Systems Integration.

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

You wont know unless you try. You have good experience, but depending on the dept / area some guidelines may be more strict than others.

WHS but that's quite a history to have expecting to be let loose on financial systems. The police issue probably won't be an issue as long as it's not for theft or something to do with dishonesty but the bankruptcy thing is going to have alarm bells going. You ran put of money but work with money systems??

As he says you've got nothing to lose to apply and in my experience two weeks isn't anything to worry about. Mine took longer than that. Good luck.

Is the criminal conviction "spent". If it is, you don't need to declare it, although some FCA registered positions might look at unspent convictions.

However, the bankruptcy - I think you are wasting your time at any big finance shop, especially RBS of all places until it disappears off your credit files (6-12 years) - even a 5 year CCJ > £500 will disbar you - no flexibility.

If you want to waste your time, fair enough, but you will be severaly pi$$ing off the hiring manager/pimp in going for a job which you know you are almost certain not to be accepted for.

Thank you all for the feedback, I can but try and be honest. My convictions are spent > 5.5 years ago. I have created an Experian account and put in my last 6 years worth of addresses. My bankruptcy does not show up or any CCJ's if there were any. My credit score is good as 892 out of 999 and is just below the 'very good' section of the chart.

I am not sure if Kroll would use the same data, does anyone know? Also is Experian the best credit reference agency to use for finding out as much information as possible? I know Equifax used to exist but I also know that multiple searches cause triggers on your credit file.

So I just have to go through the process and see what happens.

They will be a lot more in depth than a basic credit check. For example they usually ask for back accounts for any periods you were out of work to see what you've been up to and so on. I wouldn't be surprised when they come back to you it will be to request more info. Just have to wait and see.

That shouldn't be a problem, just prepare a good explanation for any period you were out of work, e.g. travel (but they may ask for tickets), break with family, home renovations, study etc
