Agree with that. I got to the end of tether on a long term gig with this and despite advising my client manager of the situation nothing changed so eventually agreed to leave (just giving me in enough time to line something else up). Was like a breath of fresh air to be in a good new gig with plenty to do. Dunno why I didn't do it earlier.

I guess it's because we're conditioned to think that no work = easy and getting cash for easy work is a win win. But, the reality is that most of our type thrive off the challenges in an interesting job.

My first job ended up like that, where there was just nothing to fix, and I used to joke that I'd "completed the Internet". The reality was that I was miserable as hell.

I am in a somewhat similar situation, waiting for my SC to come through and while it does I am hid away from the rest of the Programme, get a bit of work thrown my way every now and then but now in my 6th week enthusiasm is starting to wane.

Doesn't help that there is a major release at the end of August so everyone is taking their holiday now

Work's a bit flat at current client owing to this ^ ; key stakeholders away, impacting deliverables, & am becoming bored tbh.

All permies are SC Cleared. No Doubt
I had an existing SC one which they took upon.

Still waiting for the appropriate login to a database over three weeks into my current gig. Plenty to read up on but there's only so much you can do without having the access required. Gotta love red tape. Looking busy is at lot harder than actually being busy too!

Had this probably more than most, for the usual reasons plus :
                      - Manager said to me, look all the perms say they are busy (dont they always ?) so even if you are doing half a job, I still have to get someone to do that half !
                      - It's MUCH easier to renew someone than get a new one, still need softlad ? yeah, ok. You NEED a new softlad ???? PROVE IT. So you end up staying longer
                      Coping mechanisms:
                      - I have a keen interest in investments so have spent much time broadening knowledge, reading up etc and monitoring/trading from my desk...
                      - I have no qualms going to boss and saying look I am happy to help out on anything else, not proud about what I do (within reason) This has rarely resulted in extra work (or only a couple of days) and NEVER resulted in the contract ending.
After this, my conscience is clear and I happily worked a steady 9-4 with footy at lunch for a good 18 months and made good use of wfh.
I find all aspects of IT to be equally tedious so no happier being 'busy' as I don't get much satisfaction from any of the pointless 'tasks' I am working on.
