All three of us were like dear in headlights. We weren't expecting him to explode like that. We argued our side but he wasn't having it, concluding that we had to work harder and faster to get the work done

After the second or third time he did this, I had enough and called his bluff saying I'll call my agent and let him know. Since then the threats have stopped for all of us. Weird.

Sorry Mr Client but my insurance only covers me to do what is in the contract. If I do something not stipulated in my contract then I am effectively running a business without public liability insurance, which is illegal.
If something were to go wrong would you want people asking you why you knowingly used a contractor who was operating illegally?
      Still Invoicing

Not really weird. Pretty basic stuff calling his bluff TBH.

Ps you mean Deer don't you?
Pps isn't it more common to say a rabbit?

"Dear" meaning "little old granny". A little old granny in headlights. It honestly wasn't a typo(!)

You get more man-points for hitting a deer compared to a rabbit, too

My first contract ever and I'm in the thick of it! Taking it as a learning experience.

You hit a rabbit and the car after you can scrape it off the road as road kill.

You hit a deer you may not live to find out if you have earned "man-points" as some deer are ****ing massive.

Anyway as I mentioned previously time to find another contract - some clients get shocked when you refuse to renew and happily leave

                    +1

Clients will try and squeeze as much as possible if you're on a day rate but any time I've been hourly they knew they had the pay for the time I worked.

If he is dictating your hours but is complaining the targets are not being met you have to focus on demonstrating you have done all that you can within those hours. All clients will push for more so can't really knock them for that but if you can clearly evidence the situation he won't be able to do anything but bluster. Don't give him an opportunity to argue anything. These are the hours I worked, this is what was done and this was what wasn't done due to time limitations. Leave him to then make the decision on where the problem is and fix it. If you have clearly demonstrated you've done your best in the dictated hours he would be bloody stupid to walk you as that means nothing is done.
Not often I am in TOTAL agreement with you NLK but very well put!
