Worth pointing out, I was given the same advice on here when I entered the contract world OP. I did it anyway and and things are going well.

Not an attack on you Pondlife, just that the OP should listen to advice but not take it as gospel.

        Simple don't use a phone!

Most of my contact is via email or linkedin which can be rejected without much effort (or more likely poiltly informed contract only) with only a few trusted pimps having my secondry mobile number

Can you just say that you are only after contract roles when agents call ? You would only have to say it 25 times in one morning based on the above...

I've replaced my CV with a version that more clearly states that I'm currently in a permanent role with a 2 week notice and that I'm looking to start contracting and that I am not available to pick up the phone during office hours, but that I tend to answer e-mails within 10 minutes. This has helped a whole lot.

I can't pick up the phone 25 times during office hours, as I'm still in a role at my current company.

Recruiters seem to always want to tell the company name by phone, not in an e-mail, so can be tricky to find out if you've already been submitted without calling.

How do I know when a message is irrelevant? Recruiters disclose often disclose very little information in voicemails.

If it's quite clear that you're contract only, restricted by location, industry or whatever, then an agent will often disclose that much in the voicemail. If they don't mention it, either in the voicemail or in the opening gambit of a call, then typically (I find) it's because the role doesn't match those requirements.

Part of what you're seeing is agents very well knowing the situation and conveniently ignoring it. You haven't quite made the leap yet, so would be an easier catch for a permie role than a long time contractor. Expect this to continue, at least as long as you call them "recruiters".

Any similar experiences on a red hot phone with almost all permanent opportunities?

I was thinking of setting up a VOIP server and use a phone menu...

Replace your CV with a branded Yourco Employee profile. That seems to do the trick.
