Role Includes Paying For Work Related Flights

Had call from agent today - they are advertising a role which requires few days travel to European sites each month. Clientco though will not pay for these flights/accom. Agent explained that they are expecting the contractor to pay out of the contractor daily rate and they will also not budge on rate to accommodate.

I have not come across this before, expressed how ludicrous this sounds and politely declined to take the conversation any further.

Crazy stuff. Cost of a European flight +hotel for a week away can easily be over £1000. So if they won't pay you're expected to soak up a rate cut of £200 per day???

Nothing wrong with ads like that, at least they are upfront about it. If the rate is not high enough to allow for these expenses to be paid by you, then don't take the offer - simples

"Wont' budge on the rate to accommodate" actually means "the rate isn't high enough for ME to consider worthwhile", clearly if they have already thought about this issue they know it's coming out of what they pay you.

It's unusual but not in principle horrendous unless the number of flights and the notice they give you to travel are not very well defined. "Oh, we forgot something, can you fly back tomorrow please?"

Of course there's everything wrong with ads like this. Its a piss take. Are they a reputable company or are they like the myriads of courier companies who advertise for delivery drivers but must have their own van?

They won't get anyone to take them though as you will likely have to have a EU passport to take on the role.

How can it be a rate cut if you haven't agreed a rate yet?

But as has already been said, doesn't hurt the fools to ask

Surely it depends on the day rate on offer.

There's plenty on here that travel from up north to the south east with no client expenses paid. You factor that in when deciding if it's worth it or not. If the travel can be planned far enough in advance then book a budget airline. If however the client expects you to turn up somewhere miles from civilisation on a days notice then yes, it's commercial suicide.
