I have received a new contract. My rate is x per day. Shall I ask the agent to state in the contract what the hours will be i.e. 9-5:30 with 1 hour lunch break?

The agent will automatically put in 8 working hours. So if a contract has no hours it's up to you to find out from the client staff how many hours they employed to work, what time the people you need to work alongside come in and do roughly the same within reason.

Obviously if there is no work for you to do then you go home. If that means some days you work a 6 hour day but others you work a 9 hour day then you just charge a day rate for both. However make sure you don't do too many of the former as it leads to resentment.

I had contract for current gig reviewed and one of the reasons the first draft failed was because of the wording around hours. Now it just states: "To be agreed between the client and contractor". Funny thing is nobody has yet mentioned it and I am 4 months in! Funny world this contracting stuff.
