Well, the tone of your question was rather brusque.

It seems that you're hacked off with your client for whatever reason but, truth be told, no one on here cares about that. What most on here DO care about is their reputation with the client and the way your question was framed suggests that perhaps you don't.

If you had simply asked "I have a 4-week notice period but I want to leave after 1 week, what can I do?" you might have got a different response.

FYI, I asked this same question to a lawyer several years ago. His response was, "if your contract states a 4-week notice period then you have to give 4-weeks notice"

As it was, I negotiated my way out of it by talking calmly and reasonably to my client.

    You signed the contract.

For me if I really wanted to leave somewhere and had a months notice just hand it in honour it till the end but i would break it up by taking several days off even if i had to say i was ill that will make it go quicker.

You will lose money for those days but still get the rest and no-oone can moan as you walk out on the last day of the notice period.

Yeah TF, stop raging. You need to think about some bisoprolol, propananol or ramipril before it's too late!

Yeah but taking days off during notice period is a bit of moot point that has many people divided. Few days fine, two weeks to effectively cut the notice period short no.

I did mean only a few days not to suddenly announce your going on holiday for 2 weeks! A day or 2 or 3 throughout a month can really help break it up and make it more bareable.

I tend to do it a lot in contracts where i get extensions where i relunctantly take them as there is not much else around.

I'm already on two out of those, and have been on propananol in the past

As a consequence, I really have very little rage in me these days.

No, but we all use due diligence and we all get our contracts checked out and we all have our eyes open.

                  Maybe?!

Lets ask the same question in a different way, what would happen if your client decided to stop paying you in breach of their contract with you, how would you take the breach of contract?

On a similar vein, remember my recent contact grief?
Agent says heres extension, 2 months, same notice as before (1 month). I say lets talk about this notice - I want a week. He hides for weeks and hopes I'll just start extension.
Two days before I emailed him a corrected signed contract with 7 days notice.

2 weeks into extension I still aint heard a peep from him.

Im betting hes thinking if I try the 7 days notice he'll still try to blag it out and say I cant.
