It took 17 years to build at a cost of 12.2 billion Swiss francs ($12 billion). On time and on budget. As opposed to HS1, initially budgeted at £56 billion ($75.9 billion) and now estimated at £106bn ($143.7 billion). Perhaps the Swiss should help out? Especially considering their original railway network was constructed largely by British engineers.

But the UK has projects like Crossrail - £4bn over budget and over four years late. Four years of extra employment, the Swiss missed a trick.

My guess would be that ferry is better than lorry for CO2 (economies of scale), and for NOx it is the local pollution that is the problem which would worse for lorries. Just a guess through, so happy to be proved wrong.

Shipping has been a dirty secret for years. The problem is mainly with the largest ships like bulk carriers, oil tankers and container ships. One estimate suggested global shipping would be the equivalent of the 6th highest C02 emissions country in the world.
