Just had a look at the government's website - apparently you can renew online now using a digital photo.

EU VIES VAT number validation stopped working since UK dropped out and they enforced block on API requests with requestor being UK

The one I've just replaced was 10 years and 9 months. Issued in Feb but supposed to expire in Nov. Lots of countries aren't accepting these extended passports so I sorted mine out in December as it didn't have sufficient left to go anywhere.
