The Royal Navy is preparing to protect Britain’s fishing waters in the event of a no-deal Brexit by deploying four patrol ships, it emerged on Friday night.

The armed vessels, said to span 80 metres in length, are to be primed from January 1 to deter EU fishing boats from illegally entering the English Channel.

Ministers are also reported to be preparing legislation to strengthen the powers of the Royal Navy Police to allow them to board foreign vessels and arrest fishermen if required.

It comes amid mounting concern that the exclusive economic zone, which can extend 200 miles from shore, will be the scene of a new “cod war” reminiscent of the clashes with Iceland in the 1970s.

The four patrol ships will be prepared to stop and even impound EU vessels if there is no breakthrough in the Brexit talks before the end of the month."

Was waiting for a gammon to say that. What they don't realise is that other countries have also navies to protect their waters, let's see what happens when a British fishing boat gets sunk for fishing illegally in EU waters.

This is the reverse of what happened with the UK and Iceland where the Royal Navy were forcing there way into Icelandic fishing waters to protect UK fishermen. That ended is disaster and defeat for the Royal Navy.

Most of cod and haddock is in Norwegian and Icelandic waters, which is EEA so no more fishing rights for the Brits
