well, given some of the more outlandish responses to your post, I might add that nothing fundamental will change in this country until the mechanism of privilege is dismantled.

Police officers, solicitors, barristers, judges and civil servants should be barred from membership of secret societies. No one should receive an honour for just doing their job, unless the doing of that job has enabled them to make a personal difference to issues outside of their employment. Many celebrities use their fame to help charities etc. Bravery and related awards would be continued of course.

A chief constable of police or a senior forces member should not be awarded a knighthood, just for doing their job. Civil servants shouldn't be awarded lower honours just for doing their job. Have you ever asked the question how some of these knights have gained their honour?

Elitist organisations such as Eton, Harrow and Oxbridge should be obliged to offer fully funded scholarships, with sufficient funding for the social side, so that talented individuals from less affluent backgrounds would have the opportunity to excel. Although one report I read recently claimed that talented individuals would fare no better if they did attend such institutions.

However, if more individuals from what might be called the "real World" were able to reach the higher echelons of government, where most are from the elitist organisations that I've listed, the rest of us may benefit from a more principled government.

I'm not a Labour or Conservative supporter, I'm just a socialist and conservative who believes that the UK should become more of a meritocracy. This is one of the few issues I agreed with Tony Bliar on.

You need to break this down to soundbites.

Norway, invade, will be awesome and free skiing for the masses.

Probably a tad too specific to win over a majority in a GE.
