Given the fact that one has to travel to Sunderland to participate, I'm not surprised by the lack of initial participation.

Wasn't Sunderland a hotbed of leave voters? Surely some of them could have been bothered to turn up for the start of the march at least? Sounds like an excuse, not a reason.
