      It's an EU regulation, so it's obviously for our own good. God help anything which manages to escape from a zoo, though. If we don't make a concerted attempt to shoot it, we'll be fined. Thankfully it's only for one day though...
      His heart is in the right place - shame we can't say the same about his brain...

        It’s an EU regulation, which was signed and approved back in 2015. As such it has been law since then. The regulation was drafted with the Committee made up of Member State representatives, and voted on and approved by the European Parliament. The U.K. also plans to implement it directly through U.K. law.

        The U.K. Secretary of State for the Environment seems to think that they should be controlled:

        Non-native Species: 4 Dec 2018: Hansard Written Answers - TheyWorkForYou

        And the British Ecological Society calls it “a much welcomed step towards halting biodiversity loss”

        The first EU list of 37 invasive alien species comes into force - British Ecological Society

        But sure, “EU”.
