The problem is that not enough people get the calling.
Well vetran has apparently lots of friends who would like to be nurses...Now that the EU lot are buggering off maybe they could step up to the wicket and do their bit for the country...
Brexit is having a wee in the middle of the room at a house party because nobody is talking to you, and then complaining about the smell.

Use to be like that. Now it's a graduate profession, so people who had the call, but not the academic ability, are excluded. Which is a shame, because when it comes to dealing with patients who are oozing, people with a vocation are to be preferred over people with a degree. (Not that expert nurses with a degree are a bad thing either, but a non-academic route to nursing should have been kept - although nursing associates might fill the gap).

      Won't help. They'll need degrees.

You are still an idiot for making up bollocks like that. That is not what I think and as usual you got it wrong with your prejudice.

Whilst some people who have English as a second language may have a very good command of English and a clearly understandable accent that is not true of all. That may be why a mandatory test was added because it was a significant issue.

Look there are even stories in the papers about it

Foreign doctors work in Britain without speaking English - Telegraph

The General Medical Council said current European rules represent a “serious cause of concern” and risk to patient safety by banning it from testing GPs’ language skills before they can start working here.

The regulator said it has some doctors on its books who "are not able to communicate in English" but could not prevent them seeking work here under European law.

It warned that bogus doctors from other countries may find their way into the NHS by presenting fake certificates or ID, because of a lack of security checks, or could hide the fact that they had been suspended from practising in their homeland.

Almost half of EU doctors seeking work in UK failed to prove English skills | Society | The Guardian

Almost half of EU doctors seeking work in UK failed to prove English skills
General Medical Council says 45% of those who applied in the past year did not give evidence of their language skills and were refused a licence to practise
Comes to something when even the Guardian has a go at foreigners.

But I do agree regional UK accents do present an issue and speech training for all NHS staff with issues might be a good step forward.

I was thinking of recording this, dubbing in "vetran" for "gordon".

But it has a nasty sexual predator paedophile in it, so I'll have to find a different one.
