What sovereign powers did the UK loose being a EU member?
"The US actively dislikes many existing EU measures", he says, "and will certainly pressurise the UK to jettison many of them in any FTA negotiations with the UK".
In short, though, if the UK were itself to adopt "action levels", and then get the EU to follow suit, it would be no bad thing. As far as Brexit horrors go, this is not one of them.
Why should the EU follow suit? The UK will have no bearing on any future EU rulings as it won't be part of the EU...
In a way, I find the transparency of the US authorities refreshing.
You must also take into account that Richard North is a committed Leaver and so has his own interests at heart (his blog is also quite badly written: Profile)
I have now been in the USA for 3 weeks and I can tell you first hand that food in Europe does actually look and taste better, even my American colleagues who travel to Europe agree with me on that...
“Brexit is having a wee in the middle of the room at a house party because nobody is talking to you, and then complaining about the smell.”
As usual, misunderstanding the terminology or the intent.
Seeking to overturn EU-wide rules is not an issue of sovereignty, although it may be one of national interest (while noting that from the quoted examples I don't see that). It's a lack of leverage within the club that we are trying hard to escape from.
As usual, a misunderstanding of our influence as member before Cameron sold our veto power for some financial party point scoring. My how has one individual managed to do so much damage.
There was a time the UK could veto any new EU-law before being ratified. It was our right. Any hooe, vassal state becomes you when you don't pay the rent.
While Cameron has failed to secure the concessions for Britain's strong financial services sector, Britain has also forfeited its place at the table where Europe's future and the new euro regime will be determined. For the first time since Britain joined the European Community in 1973, a treaty that goes to the heart of how the EU works will be struck without a British signature.
"Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and beat you with experience". Mark Twain
Why? In stead of some laws made in Brussels by hated politicians you will now have laws made by hated politicians in Westminster, why is that so important?
For the average citizen it is not going to make any difference whatsoever (except maybe that they may lose workers rights and protection, human rights, freedom of travel and movement, health and safety rights, etc etc)
We can vote to replace the ones in Westminster.
His heart is in the right place - shame we can't say the same about his brain...
Just curious... Scotland cannot hold referendum without permission, therefore not sovereign. However the UK can. What sovereign powers did the UK loose as a EU member? Anyone?
Wrong, Scottish people are sovereign.
We are playing by the book by asking for a section 30 order but if its refused we can hold one anyway. Its possible the UK government will then take us to the supreme court again (so much for being an equal partner in the union) but the latest Claim of Right vote in the HoC would support Scotland's right to pick the government best suited to Scotland and that would be independent Holyrood.
Imagine, if you would, that the UK said to the EU they were holding a referendum to leave the EU and the EU said "No, we don't give you permission". What would the outcry be like from Westminster?
There are two acts of union. One on the English side and one on the Scottish side. Its a union that can be dissolved by either side.
