A quarter of Jaguar Land Rover’s workers will down tools for two weeks later this month in the latest sign of a sales slowdown for the troubled car manufacturer.

The 10,000 workers at JLR’s Solihull plant will continue to receive pay during their time off but union bosses said the shutdown would come as “deeply troubling” news for staff.

The company has already cut 1,000 jobs this year and has moved some workers at its Castle Bromwich plant onto a three-day week until Christmas amid uncertainty over Brexit and a backlash against diesel cars.

It's because they can't shift their diesels, because nobody in their right mind* is going to shell-out fifty grand+ on a diesel. There's a de-ja-vu about this... Some years ago, I forget the specific story. A shutdown for 2-weeks and then, just as people expected to return to work it was extended for another week. And then another.. What business was this? You can see the same thing happening again.

Might have been the mini plant in Oxford, who have also announced to close for several weeks after brexit:

I don't think this is a Brexit issue. I half recall JLR saying UK sales had held up. It was China and maybe Europe causing the trouble.

You have to be careful about blaming Brexit for everything, especially as it hasn't happened yet.

The Government is pursuing an alignment with the EU (Chequers). Canada++ is not getting sufficient traction. Chequers can only go more BRINO as the negotiations go on. The EU has all the cards. In addition to that, the liklihood of a second referendum has been rising noticeably. A second referendum is most likely to be marginally Remain. True Brexiteers will remain faithful to the cause but enough ordinary people will have been disappointed by all the revelations of false promises, outright lies, woeful mismanagement of the negotiations, and the nasty complications nobody warned them about.
