Michel Barnier says he strongly opposes May's Brexit trade proposal

Michel Barnier has said he is “strongly opposed” to the prime minister’s Chequers proposals on future trade, as he advised European car manufacturers that they will have to use fewer British-made parts after Brexit.

In his most damning condemnation yet of the UK government’s plans, the EU’s chief Brexit negotiator said the British offer on customs was illegal and its suggestion of a “common rulebook” on goods would kill the European project.

Instead, in an intervention that will concern the 186,000 people directly employed by the car industry in the UK, Barnier warned European manufacturers that the streamlined system of imports and exports between the UK and the rest of Europe would come to an end.

“Michel Barnier has warned that Theresa May's Chequer's deal will spell the "end" of the European project and the Single Market.

The EU's chief Brexit negotiator told Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, a German newspaper, warned that Britain will not be able to "cherry pick" what it wants from Brexit.

He said: "The British have a choice. They could stay in the single market, like Norway, which is also not a member of the EU, but they would then have to accept all the regulations and make contributions to European solidarity.

"But if we let the British cherrypick which of our regulations to follow, that would have serious consequence: all sorts of other third countries could insist that we offer...“

It's only 186,000 people. It'll be worth it.

Don't we all long for the days when "illegal" was something for a Judge and Jury to decide, rather than some upstart civil servant who's enjoying his one and only time in the limelight...

So you need a Judge to rule that things like murder and bank robbery are illegal?

Fair point, I was thinking of "guilty". The point about Barnier being little more than a jumped-up traffic warden with more power than he knows what to do with still stands. Nobody voted for him. Nobody even voted for the people who appointed him.

Are you saying that his appointment was illegal?

A bit like Olly Robbins or Tim Barrow
Brexit is having a wee in the middle of the room at a house party because nobody is talking to you, and then complaining about the smell.

"A number of EU member states, including Germany, believe an aspirational political declaration on the future that ducks the most contentious trade issues now would be the best way to avoid a no-deal Brexit.

The priority for the remaining 27 EU member states is to have the withdrawal agreement – on citizens’ rights, the Irish border and the £39bn “divorce bill” – completed and ratified by 29 March 2019.

EU and British negotiators will then have until 31 December 2020 to sign off on a future trade deal, during which time the UK will effectively remain a member of the EU, but without voting rights."
