An extremely interesting and detailed paper on this produced by the EU commission...

I would say that Mr Karlsson who is the president of a border services company might have a biased interest in making a case for a smart border.

    AUTHOR(S)
Lars KARLSSON, President of KGH Border Services; Former Director of World Customs Organization; Deputy Director General of Swedish Customs

Still interesting as you say but RFIDS, NPR's , Smart Apps , Random customs checks etc. etc. is still a lot more expensive , has more chance of going wrong and causing delays and more costly for companies than the free trade they have now. Brexit is a damage limitation exercise, that bit sort of rings true.
Warning unicorn meat may give you hallucinations

Sounds like he is an expert worth listening to.

I agree it’s not a smooth as free Borders. But the EU won’t compromise in the negotiations.

Compromise on what? The U.K. agreed in Phase 1 that there will be no border, so it’s up to the U.K. to make that workable within the context of the UK’s stated position on no CU, and the WTO requirement that the U.K. cannot unilaterally allow tariff-free trade to occur and within the WTO definition of a free trade or bilateral agreement.

We don't need no stinking experts: https://www.ft.com/content/3be49734-...4-abc22d5d108c
Brexit is having a wee in the middle of the room at a house party because nobody is talking to you, and then complaining about the smell.

Put yourself in the mind of a hard-core brexit supporter.
UK & EU agree to no border, it's now the EU's fault that the UK realise they can't have a scenario of "no border" at the same time as refusing to have a free trade agreement.

The UK government has two diametrically opposed positions on the subject. To a brexiteer, it's not the UK government's fault for that, but the EU's.

Compromise in terms of a bespoke deal rather than an off the peg.

Many existing opt outs and compromises.

San Marino has a partial customs union with the EU with opt outs on certain goods.

              Lichtenstein has FOM opt outs.

It’s pretty clear what the UK position is.

We can have a Norway border pimped with smart borders 2.0 tech.

                Simples.

Is the Norway border (even with smart tech) defined as a hard border?

Where abouts on the border in Ireland are you going to be building customs control posts, holding depots, etc?

How long will it take to implement the smart tech, and when will the work be starting? What are you going to do in the meantime if the work is not finished before the U.K. leaves?

                    Not quite so simples.
