I was going to post a similar thread last week, but what I did, I refused to do the whole day ( a whole working day) of team building, and not because of the IR35 but because I think it's not professional behaviour for a contractor to be paid to team-build with the permies. So I took a day off and I told then I'll take one any time this stupid thing goes on.

Irony of the story is that now the manager thinks that mine is unprofessional behaviour. Permies!!!

An email dropped into my inbox from the contact at my client this morning (he himself a contract project manager!) with the subject "<clientco> away day". This thread sprung to mind but I needn't have worried. He was just informing me that everyone in the company was out on an away day next week and that he would be in the office continuing to work.

I work from home mostly but current <clientco> are very good about treating contractors as contractors and not employees. I have little interaction with people in the company who aren't working on the project I'm contracted to work on and I'm always explicitly excluded from company meetings in the office when they have them (as in, asked to leave the room). So pleased to see there was nothing different here.

I'm with you - I certainly wouldn't attend one of these if asked. It's outside the scope of my contract.

What exactly is the content of these? We have them at our client but they involve a couple of hours programme updates, news and forecast which is essential for the project. They then bugger about for a bit after which I personally duck out of. I wouldn't see it a problem if it does have some work related content. If it is just a jolly jaunt totally away from the work then yes avoidance would be best IMO.
