I had set up a direct debit to pay VAT from my Business bank account and the first payment form this came out in September. My VAT was due to be paid start of December and as I had DD setup my accountant just submitted my return. I noticed that after first week of Dec no VAT payment had been taken, I logged into the VAT online portal and reset it up as It looked to have been removed. My payment went through on 19th and I just received a 10% surcharge!! What is going on here?

This is not un-common. There's something fishy going on with VAT Direct Debits. Phone 'em and give em some. The bank should be able to confirm you hadn't cancelled the DD yourself, so they failed to request it.Originally posted by LatteLiberal View PostI had set up a direct debit to pay VAT from my Business bank account and the first payment form this came out in September. Will call them on Monday, no way am I paying the fine I setup the DD and watched the first payment go through. Either my bank or HMRC will be taking care of this.Originally posted by bless 'em all View PostThis is not un-common. There's something fishy going on with VAT Direct Debits. Yeah, I'm sure they will quickly backtrack on this once you talk to them.Originally posted by LatteLiberal View PostWill call them on Monday, no way am I paying the fine I setup the DD and watched the first payment go through. Either my bank or HMRC will be taking care of this.
Wouldn't it be great if it was a level playing field and they had to pay YOU 10% for their mistake (the same as the surcharge they wrongly tried to levy).Free advice and opinions - refunds are available if you are not 100% satisfied.Comment
