PAYE Payment overdue letter from HMRC

    Hi all

I have received a letter from HMRC "Debt Management and Banking" indicating "PAYE payment overdue for 2012-2013". Sounds like an annual payment but they are probably referring to my most recent quarterly payment.

This payment was paid on July 2nd, but was not due until July 19th. The reference on the payment was correct.

Are HMRC's systems at fault here? Or could I have forgotten to pay something?

I will of course call them tomorrow to clarify, but it would be good to get some thoughts on this from you guys.

I got one of those. Put the wrong reference on my payment.

They were very helpful and decent on the phone.

It sounds it only your quarterly payment for PAYE because it indicates 2012-2013. Giving them a call is the best solution. I received a notice from them before but it was VAT, everyhting was solved. Nothing to worry about as long as you had paid what is due before the due date. I assume you paid electronically not by cheque.

Thanks guys, must admit that I don't want anything further to worry about! I paid electronically, all details are correct and so the only thing I can think of is that I've paid too early so the payment might have gone into the wrong 'pot'.

I'll call them tomorrow morning to clear it up.

I seriously believe that they need to update their systems.

I received a notification about a week ago that I still owed £214 tax, can't remember exactly when but I know that I rolled it into my payment on account in January.

So I rang them to qeury my £214 tax bill, only to be told that I actually have a large credit on my account, that I paid at their request over the past half year.

I owe it on my SA, so won't be asking for a refund, I do wonder sometimes how accurate their systems are.

Today I received a £482 refund cheque. WTF!!!
Edit : Just looked and it was for 2010/11.
Edit 2 : They allocated my July PAYE payment to the wrong tax year!!!Doh!!

Did you include the four-digit period qualifer on the payment reference? If not it may well have gone to the wrong period, that happened to me last year.

Phone them up; they are actually very helpful.

              What Malvolio said.

Payroll periods kinda coincide with the tax year, in that each payroll month goes from 6th of one month to 5th of the next. Therefore paying on 2nd July (without the correct 4 digits on the end) would be considered too early to be paying the quarter just ended.

Give them a call though, sure it'll be sorted v easily...just a shame they send out such aggressive sounding letters as a first action.

                HMRC's fault.

I've had these for the last two years and got my accountant onto it. They gave HMRC an earfull. They acknowledged I shouldnt have received the first letter. Then, 12 months later, they did it again!

I've kept the mails from my accountant as proof too.

Get your accountant on the job to give HMRC a butt kicking.

                  Hey all

Called HMRC and sorted it out over the phone within a couple of minutes. Their automated system is cr@p and doesn't recognise a payment inthe correct period if made a few days early. And then a letter is sent out automatically, something to the effect that you'll be shot at dawn if you don't pay the 'debt'.

Nice enough folk on the phone though.

                  Thanks again.

I got one of these yesterday, checked my payment date..... two days too early. I do love a system that accounts for prompt payment.
