Is it normal for my accountant to ignore me

I had an accountant and I have just stopped paying him after he said he'd setup payroll but never did. He also ignored an email and didn't recognise my name on the phone.

So I tried to get another accountant and they too have ignored my email and haven't called back when they said they would.

Maybe I am overreacting but is this normal for accountants to do this? Perhaps they just deal with everything at the end of the year. Idk.

Not in my opinion, end of the tax year or not. If they say they are going to do something, then they should!

I think you've just been unlucky! Try a few well known ones, they should be more concerned about response times and good service.

From what I can tell from anecdotal evidence, its probably not "normal" for them to ignore you but it certainly isn't unusual. Speak to a couple of colleagues and get some referrals. Then go deal with someone who will commit to replying to emails etc within their SLA.

(Don't beat him up too much for not recognising you on the 'phone though. Its not always easy if you have a lot of clients. I don't recognise a lot of my clients when I speak to them but I am clearly much better at hiding it than your guy)

If your accountant is of the traditional 'high street' variety, then they are generally geared up to provide an annual service, rather than the monthly, ongoing service that most contractor accountants offer.

There are exceptions to the above but that is my general observation after all these years.

If our accountant was as lax as yours sounds they would be gone, immediately. Business is difficult enough without receiving shoddy service from suppliers.

              Are these High Street accountants?

I would contact a few accountants and see which ones get back to you in a reasonable time.

Also i would reccommend going for an accountant with unlimited contact via phone, e-mail or meetings as these tend to be much better if you want an ongoing service.

                    Its beyond normal

Under the normal circumstances, The act is quiet abnormal for any accountant, or for that matter any service provider , Just cannot do this!!! all you have to do is move on to a new one.
