Apparently, the trial collapsed just before the first of 5 HMRC officers were due to give evidence.

So there are some judges who cannot be bribed.

HMRC's case collapsed because their own witnesses were supporting the defence.

The judge said he wholly agreed and if they (HMRC) had gone on to the bitter end it would have been bitter for them. He also said that justice was done.

It's a pity those 5 HMRC officers weren't made to take the stand. One of them was Mr MacDougall who will be familiar to all of us as the lead officer in charge of the DTA scheme investigation.

Good grief - the only way that could have been made to look more shambolic and incompetent would have been to let HMRC continue with the case and prove it in person.

What options does Watkins have then? Surely he can take them to task over this?

I bet HMRC wasted more in legal fees on this farce than what they claim I owe them.

Also lets not forget they raided the Montpelier offices and took lots of paperwork and computers away... just before the court of appeal hearing about section 58... possibly providing them with useful info for their case.

                  One option would be:

                  Malicious Prosecution

ps. the above refers to the Police but it equally applies to HMRC

It's police and Crown Prosecution Service.... Even if the former aren't involved (and they are) the latter definitely are...
