      Am I right in thinking it was only retrospective for a year and the chancellor had given advance notice of the retrospective change, so it wasn't really retrospective.

      Contrast that with the retro tax applied to us, going back 10 years and with no advance warning.

        Yep, was announced in 2012 they were applying the rule during 2013 finance bill going back to 2012, so plenty of warning given:

        Tax expert John Christian of Pinsent Masons, the law firm behind Out-Law.com, said that the court's conclusions were "not surprising, given in particular the Chancellor's warning in the 2012 Budget to close down residential SDLT avoidance with retrospective effect".
