Good idea! JRM sounds on fire when he speaks out against retrospective tax.

All three speakers spoke very well I thought. They packed quite a lot into a woefully short period of time.

      - And may I kindly suggest to CUK users that you desist from derogatory remarks about the one MP who has actually helped us - and if we want to stand any chance of him pushing this matter forward, having now done his probing amendment, then we need to be grateful to him.

Anyone who doesn't understand the meaning or purpose of Probing Amendment should really look it up - and then contemplate the progress that this Campaign has made in such a short period, voluntarily.

Despite my disappointment, I thought Mills was fantastic. He really stuck him neck out in front of the boss. Lets hope he keeps it up.

          Here here DP !

This is all part of a process that a lot of us don't understand, so let's knock the people who are helping us just yet.

I just found this online which pretty much (in my opinion) explains what happened and I don't feel so sick now. PM me if this link doesn't come out ok.

Those were his arguments, and I have to say they are all extraordinarily weak, and easily shot to smithereens. We will see the transcript tomorrow, and I am of the firm view that Gauke has just dug his hole a tad deeper, especially given his 2008 objections to the very same matter.

The good news is that we have reached an important milestone - something to build upon. Our plight has been aired, noone spoke against us EXCEPT Gauke; several Tories supported us, and Fabian Hamilton was brilliant.

I see this is as a very positive day - perhaps because I understood that a probing amendment is simply meant, at this early stage of our progressive campaign, to elicit views from people, and air the matter publicly.

I wouldnt be surprised if the matter is raised again at the Report Stage of the Bill - I understand that some MP's who are not on the Finance Bill would prefer this anyway, thus giving them an oppo to speak in our favour, all with the advance benefit of knowing Gauke's untenably weak position.

So, although we are all a tad pi()ed off that chip fat and point of order people delayed matters, we did achieve this initial objective - 3 months ago this wasn't even a possibility.

Well done Whitehouse. Well done NTRT. What do you want us to do next?
I think Mills hit the right level - MPs on that committee were in support of us save from Gauke - who is frankly in a very difficult position.

This is how our system works and we have to work with it to get justice.

I for one am very grateful to the MPs who have supported us. We are not at the end of the campaign folks, but a lot of work has been done - and there is more to do. The river is just beginning to form....
There's an elephant wondering around here...

I have to say I completely disagree with your view on Mills - he stood up for his own principles as a Tory MP, and a huge amount of work went into that happening by NTRT and Whitehouse.
I agree. Somehow he managed to capture the impetus for amending the retrospection in a limited timespan and did it unchallenged by anyone, except those to lend support. It had the atmosphere of a court house during summing up before a verdict. And the support from Hamilton and JRM was delivered without compromise, as if to remind Gauke about the fundamentals of being Tory. Between the lines, Gauke for me seemed content to deliver the argument provided by HMRC, without any personal comment. Disassociation obviously leaves room to manoeuvere.

Personally I thought Gauke seemed nervous, he spouted an obviously pre-prepared transcript and rushed through it without much conviction, and without lots of the usual elements of defence missing, such as "HMRC and the government look to close down loopholes quickly and to litigate" etc. He was definitely on the back foot and as has been said, its onto the next stage and battle!!! He will definitely know from this point, that he doesnt necessarily have full support which im sure will freak him, and this from his own troops!!!!!!

I think an interesting day, damn site more hopeful than ive had in the last few years anyway!! good work all....

                    Thanks Nigel!

Bloody right DP. Suggest anyone who has anything negative to say about Mr Mills keeps it to themselves (and remove the post as he may read this forum).

If you are reading this Mr Mills, my family and I really appreciate your support!
