Self Billing Invoice vs own invoice accountant won't accept my own invoice ?

    Hi,

Current agent generates self billing invoices, on some occassions due to there cr*p system I have not recieved these just the payment, so these months I've just generated the invoice myself and sent to accountant. Accountant now telling me they won't accept my own invoices for the date I didnt recieve the self bill one as its HMRC legislation it has to be the self bill invoice, is that correct I thought an invoice was just an invoice at the end of day ?

There is no HMRC legislation that says you have to have a self bill invoice rather than one you generate, unless I've missed something! Ask him to point you toward the legislation he's talking about.

If the agent is self billing thoughcan the accoutant only accept these, my issue is the agent is self bill but sometimes I don't get the invoices so in these cases I just generated my own ?

Early doors on my current contract the agent had typed in my business email address wrong and I didn't receive any self-bill invoices either.

I chased them and they were able to send these to me as they had been generated, just not correctly emailed. From 3rd invoice on all was fine and has been ever since.

I would suggest ringing the agent and asking for the invoices to be sent again for the specific dates you need.
Never has a man been heard to say on his death bed that he wishes he'd spent more time in the office.

I would advise all clients to create their own internal invoice regardless of whether there's a self bill system in place, that way you have them available should HMRC ever ask.

I think your accountant might want them for his systems or processes, not any legal requirement.

With Clare on this one - can't think of any legislation or regulation that requires accounts to be worked purely on self-bill

Treat the paperwork you get from the self-billing agency as a Remittance Advice - since that is all it is - and all becomes clear.
