    Insurance - PI/PL

    Good afternoon

I'm getting insurance (PI & PL), and I'd like to know if you've heard of/used/are using Randell Dorling Ltd, which are recommended by PCG. They're a bit cheaper than QDos, so I am considering getting them.

    Any thoughts/comments?

    Cheers

I have a few thoughts and a few comments.

But, I'm fed up of getting warnings from Cojak.

I'm sure any insurance company is fine. Its a regulated industry.

RD is fine for most jobbing contractors. However they keep the price down by giving you £100k cover of your own, topped upto £1m cover from a shared pool (so if two people claim at the same time it's £500k and so on. QDOS insures you for the full value. however, QDOS cover is not the same as the Hiscox policy that sits behind the RD one and if you want RD to cover yuo for the full £1m, it's cost about twice the PCG costs (so clearly covers a wider/different risk than QDOS).

So the PCG/RD one is fine if it's cheaper, unless your agency objects to the pooled cover concept (some do). In which case go QDOS.

You don't give very much advice Prozak, much guff but no solid advice... The time you do it is possibly the worst I have seen.

It is fine because it is regulated??? While the bank crash is going on? Way to go........

        For the OP.

QDOS is all over the place and seems reputable so I went with them. It is about £250 (less as it is claimable). You get what you pay for, particularly with insurance and for difference of £100 I would go with QDOS.

An interesting thread, as I am renewing my insurance now. I am very confused by different policies and providers as I am no expert of insurance. I looked at QDOS and Holicox and PCG. I get a quote from Holicox which is about 400 annually. QDOS and PCG are about the same level, about 200. Why is there big difference between qdos and Holicox?

          Thanks.

PCG isn't an insurance policy it's a group of individuals with the same interests i.e. freelancing. Your membership gives you to have some insurances as a perk of being a member.

All insurance policies state who the underwriter is.

If you start looking at who underwrites the policy and then the insurance terms you often find that a policy underwritten by the the same underwriter has the same basic terms and conditions.

Read my earlier answer. £400 is about right for £1m cover for an individual business, adn is what the PCG cost would be without the discount and pooled funding. Qdos is a lot less, so clearly doesn't cover something the others do. Whether or not what it doesn't cover is important rather depnds on what you need, but most contractors don't seem to need it.
