    P45 Question

    Morning,

I am a contractor through an umbrella company.

My contract says ten days days notice (both ways) which I provided in writing to everyone (client, umbrella, agency etc) and am due to finish tomorrow.

My umbrella contacts me today to tell me I have to do an exit interview with them before they can start my notice and are with-holding P45 until this is done.

Is this usual? Or can I tell them to die in a bus fire?

Exit interview? Never heard of that. Anyway if you're no longer employed by them then they need to send you a P45, no ifs no buts. Phone HMRC and tell them what you wrote above.

You don't need your P45 just complete a P46 at your next employer.

They cant refuse to give you a P45 for whatever reason.

I had this with my last permie employer. No P45 turned up even though they said they'd sent it. When I contacted them I was told they werent allowed to send a replacement.

My argument was that if this document was so important that a replacement couldnt be send then at least sending it recorded delivery would have been an idea.

In the end, I kicked off and said they had to sort something. Funnily enough the original turned up in the post (recorded) a few days later so they hadnt sent it after all.

Admitedly, could have done a P46 but thats not the point...
