    iPad through LTD company

    Hi,

Quite a few people at work using iPads for taking notes in meetings and checking emails. Seems pretty useful (albeit an expensive notepad!)

Can I legitimatly purchase through my LTD company?

    Thanks

There is no reason why you can't purchase the iPad through the company if it's wholly and exclusive. In my opinion, it's no different to buying a laptop for the business. Just make sure you get the receipt in the company name.

Depends what you are going to use it for.

Taking notes, probably not tax deductible, a notepad and pen is just as good.

Testing Apps that you are developing to sell, probably is tax deductible.

If it’s wholly, exclusive and necessary for the business then yes, HMRC words. iPads are very common with contractors at the moment; you just need to justify the expense.

Whether something cheaper is just as good has no bearing on whether it is wholly and exclusively for the business. If that were true, HMRC would limit how much you could spend on a laptop.

or a pen, and pens can be more expensive than iPads

So the quick answer is no.

Unless you are actually delivering something on the iPad like apps or part of the project you are delivering noone uses an IPad wholly and exclusively.

Lots of contractors here have them but do absolutely sod all but browse the web on then? Business justifiable? Only in their heads.

Never said it was anything to do with the price did I?

Its what it is used for that counts. If you buy an iPad through the company, and the only business use is taking notes in meetings, HMRC will argue you could have achieved the same with a notepad and pen, and that the other 99.99% of things you use the iPad for are personal, and it is therefore a taxable benefit.

Yes, your company can buy an iPad.

Whether it is subsequently tax deductible is another matter and one that is open to debate.

Considering how commonplace iPads are now, isn't it fair to say that we need to test our web pages and web apps on them? I'm working for a mobile games company at the moment, mobile browser based stuff, and we test on loads of different devices from desktop web browsers to Android, Windows Mobile and iOS smartphones and tablets. The devices are supplied by the client of course, lying around on desks all over the place, but it should be justifiable to have my own, shouldn't it? And that should apply to anyone who is working on any web project, not just native iPad apps.

[p.s. I'm not that bothered about getting an iPad myself, though I do like them... I'm just saying, should be ok really.]
