Yes, your company can buy an iPad.

Whether it is subsequently tax deductible is another matter and one that is open to debate.

I would assume the latter is why they are asking to be honest. I don't think it is up for debate in 90% of cases to be honest but that is open to debate
A bit of self honesty an objective thinking is required as well IMO. I check my mail on it so it is business use does not fit in with business use according to HMRC!

I don't understand the need to justify, if I am being honest. If you take this to the nth degree, why have an iPhone/HTC/Samsung mobile phone, as if all you need is a phone, get yourself a £10 nokia.

I don't think HMRC is ever going to query you buying an iPad. I think it's whe you start putting HDD camcorders, 50" 3D TV's and projectors on the company books, they'll get upset, if you tell them, or they ask you.

There is no reason why you can't purchase the iPad through the company if it's wholly and exclusive. In my opinion, it's no different to buying a laptop for the business. Just make sure you get the receipt in the company name.

Of course

Is it allowable to claim tax back on it?
No (assuming we are talking causual web surfering at work and the odd email i.e. 90% of them)

Does everyone else do it?
Yes

Will I get caught?
Not in a million years for this alone and you pay the extra tax back.

Would you do it?
Yes

I use my laptop for work for a lot more than the 10% you say. I do all my Accounts, invoicing, banking, bill paying, marketing and job hunting on it. I also use it to access my clients network and when I am off site 20-40% of my time, it is the machine I work on for 8 to 10 hours per day.

I meant 90% of ipad users only use them for buggering about on the web and catching up with personal emails while at work.

Simple justification couldbe that you're not allowed to access your LtdCo email/timesheet/accounts etc from client site machines, so you use your company iPad. set it all up with your company email, and its suddenly a viable business tool, not just a fancy paperweight

Common... really... and that out weighs the general browsing and personal use. I wish people would just stop trying to justify them. Claim them by all means but don't try and make stuff up thinking it wil cut it.
