    Hire Car/Mileage

I'm currently hiring a car for a project, and I reclaim the full rental cost from my Limited company. Can I also claim mileage on top of this (since I'm currently paying the fuel cost personally)?

I assume mileage rates are designed to allow for both fuel and also depreciation/maintenance of the car, which is obviously already being covered by the rental cost in this case.

Its mileage or rental cost + fuel cost. You can't do both and personally I would think the mileage cost would be hard to justify.

The advice I was given was to claim mileage allowance only.
If you claim the rental there's a risk of HMRC claiming you could also use the rental car for personal use.

You can claim 'use of personal vehicle' because it doesn't matter how you provide the vehicle.

If the car rental is only for business use then you claim for the cost of rental plus the fuel cost. Simples.

I also thought it was as Rsoles says. The same for if you bought a car through the company. Just being on your drive means it is available for personal use so BiK comes in to play?

That may be true, but you might still be better off claiming the 40p per mile private mileage rather than the actual fuel cost, which will be how it'll work if you try to put the whole thing through the company as a business expense.

I've had to hire cars a couple of times when mine wasn't working, and always just carried on claiming the private mileage and not claimed the rental. That way there's no issue of you using it for personal use.
Will work inside IR35. Or for food.

I don't think this can be right can it? The 45p a mile allowance includes a provision for maintenance/wear and tear, you don't pay for maintenance on a hire car so HMRC might take a dim view.

Not directly, but it's factored into the rental charge,
