"Darren Upton appeared at Leeds Crown Court today (9/2/12) where he admitted
15 charges of Fraud by False Representation with 23 similar offences Taken
into Consideration. He also admitted Contempt of Court in relation to not
abiding by the terms of a restraint order. He was sentenced to 6 years
imprisonment. Confiscation proceedings were commenced which require Upton
to provide details of any assets he may have, which could be used as
compensation payments. Please don't build up any hopes as our Financial
Investigators have failed to find anything as yet."

I hope he's happy. Karma sometimes works eh!

Even after he was first arrested and bailed he was still communicating with me via email as if nothing had happened or was happening. When I tried to terminate services with him he asked me to explain why .... I never replied to his email ... I was a lucky client in that he didnt flease me but had been with him for years, dont know why may because I was over anal on checking stuff and always prefered to pay by cheque. A few memebers of his staff who knew thing weren't right were very good in getting me out and moving to a new accountant and warning me of it all. At the time I didn't believe it as I thought Darren was ok but good on contractoruk got me in touch with people who had sadly lost out so then I did believe it.

I think Darren will have along time to think about it now, I doubt his wife will stand by him after the whole mistress thing. Darren must of just lost the plot after the FSA screw up.

Like most of you, can't quite believe its the same guy that used to post on here. He had a nice business going and really no need to do the things he did. I do feel sorry for his family - horrible thing to have to go through.
P.S. What Spreadsheet? Revolutionising the contracting market again.

HMRC should do the decent / moral thing and write off the CT people owe who were defrauded !!! Or may be some of the accounting bodies should cover it.

I thought that too. 800 clients is generating at least £400k profits I'd have thought. But if £400k is coming in and £401k is going out then you're still skint. Ask Mr Micawber.

I was also one of the people who paid money to HMRC and ignored the details Darren gave me .. £16K in my case .. but he went ahead and got a refund from HMRC .. He did all this while out on bail and was e-mailing me throughout, reassuring me all was ok !!!

How on earth did he think he would get away with all this ..sounds like it was on a very grand scale!

This is exactly what happened to me, unbeknown to me he sent in a null return, he took it out of the HMRC account pretending I needed it (I have a copy of the letter he sent). I have had some legal advise where there may be a route to get back some money but it only become financially viable if there is a group of people.

I really think HMRC should have taken the hit as it came out of their account!
The court heard Darren Upton had written a letter to Judge Sally Cahill QC saying he wasn’t “a typical inmate of prison”.

But the judge said: “That simply demonstrates your arrogance continues. You are typical. Inmates of prison are people who are dishonest. You are a thoroughly dishonestly man motivated by your own selfish greed.”

In my case he filed accounts that said I owed £120! I paid the proper amount and he took the overpayment. When I spoke to HMRC in may, they led me to believe I had met my obligations and would be ok ... Did they tell you otherwise?
