    client travel query

I am LTD co set up.

I need to travel on a long haul for my client for a project meeting. This is probably about 25hrs travelling there and same back!

I was expecting to charge all travel time as normal rate, but when i told them they said i will only be allowed to book max 8hrs per day for travel. I am not so keen on travelling in own time and not getting paid, especially as its a very long distance trip with several flights etc.

What are my "rights" as contractor on this? (nothing in contract about travel).

Do a search this has been brought up before.

In short the answers (from memory) were whatever you can negotiate.

At the risk of being accused of not being helpful - what does your contract say?

Additionally, how strong is your negotiating position with the client?

Without knowing either of those, it's impossible for anyone to offer any informed opinion.

          Hi,
Well client is lacking work and making laying staff and contractors off. I am held on a pt basis.
Nothing is specified in my contract with agency re: travel.

Just thinking as its 24hrs travel that covers 2 days, if they will allow me to book 2 days x 8hrs, at least 16hrs is not as bad.

If i dont go on this trip they could try and get someone else but my manager is busy and no one else in my section available.

I know others get all travel time paid on reimbursable jobs, unfortunately this is a fixed price and the commercial people did not price for any travel costs

I would push for 2x8 hours of time for travelling - it's not unreasonable, but ultimately you need to negotiate carefully with the client if they are letting people go.

If you are flying, how are you travelling? If it's a long flight then you might want to think about flying business or premium economy at the least. Of course, if there is no budget for any of this, then chances of getting any of it paid get slim.

flying long haul cattle class - no money for business
Agree need to be careful that i dont push rock my position esp as they are making loads redundant. I would not mind so much but as its other side of World, i dont see why i should give up my own time for free!

At least make sure that you get a ticket where you could buy an upgrade if you want to spend the money. Best deal I found was US Airways, who sell an upgrade to Business for $500 on the day.

Tricky call, but, to be honest as a contractor or consultant, the travelling time would be considered to be chargeable over a certain rate. It is of course not acceptable as a contractor to be expected to turn up to a meeting in San Francisco (for example) which is a round trip of 25 hours and only charge for the meeting.

I for one, would definitely be pushing for

                  a) 1 or 2 days in leiu
                  b) Invoicing on 1 to 2s in leiu.

You're a business after all, not a FT employee and cattle class. F--k that!!!!

tickets are paid by client, so no chance of business class this time
down mind the travel even though its cattle class just want to be paid for the hassle of travelling that far and that long. i will push and see if they can give 2 days each way as minimum. cant even think of if delayed, can i claim, which i have done before with former clients.
