You may recall I have written to you on several occasions regarding the retrospective effect of Section 58 of the 2008 Finance Bill, which seeks to close a tax avoidance loophole, but unfairly punishes myself and 3000 other people for tax planning that was perfectly legitimate at the time.
The effect will be to claim back tax + interest for the past 8 years which in my case amounts to approximately £200,000.

I've forwarded a version of this to my MP Ben Wallace who I contacted several times before the hearing.

Sending by email is fine as he responded (by letter) to all my emails to him. You can mail your MP direct at the House or constituency.

I really feel for the guy the way his name has been plastered all over the papers but he had no involvement in the case whatsoever. (I know because I am in contact with him.) He was only picked by Montpelier to go on the application because he was one of the first people to receive CNs.

Maybe everyone should be thanking him not me.

Well said DR. Of course your contribution is hugely important too.

I can say from experience that being mentioned in the house, in debate and consequently Hansard was somewhat nerve wracking (in relation to a completely different matter), but his involvement is orders of magnitude more significant than this. Hats off to him.

Hey, you know how we are worried that the HMRC is using the forum for a source of information, and have indeed used information from here in the JR, why cant we just put something like this at the end of our signitures

"This information is for the intended forum post only, any used of this information outside the forum must be requested in writing to the Author"

Nah, we should end our signatures

investment ideas

as I reckon I'm not the only one who's been doing a bit of financial planning over the last few days, I though I'd ask for some investment ideas.
But feel free to tell me to bugger off if this is drifting from scope too much:

I can borrow 50k on my current mortgage rate (1.09%) and that can be on interest only. I reckon this could be a good deal as I should be able to outstrip that rate.

After I use up all the cash & stock ISA allowances (from existing cash and 10k from the loan), I still have 40k to play with.
My wife doesn't work, so I figure it's best to go in her name and use her allowances.
Has anyone got any ideas of the next best place to invest this ?

with a bit of luck, this little 'episode' will make me concentrate a bit more on my savings and I could end up making more money in the long run. thanks HMRC - I'll raise a glass in your name!
