But feel free to tell me to bugger off if this is drifting from scope too much:

I can borrow 50k on my current mortgage rate (1.09%) and that can be on interest only. I reckon this could be a good deal as I should be able to outstrip that rate.

After I use up all the cash & stock ISA allowances (from existing cash and 10k from the loan), I still have 40k to play with.
My wife doesn't work, so I figure it's best to go in her name and use her allowances.
Has anyone got any ideas of the next best place to invest this ?

with a bit of luck, this little 'episode' will make me concentrate a bit more on my savings and I could end up making more money in the long run. thanks HMRC - I'll raise a glass in your name!

Ditto - some good bargains around. Prefer to day trade them when I can. Mining took a bit of a knock last week but general trend is up.

I guess that depends on how relationships were when he left them.
            Hmmm

                  off thread but need advice

My liability is roughly £29,000 + £6,000 interest. If I take out a CTD for £19,000 would I only incur interest on the £10,000?
Would HMRC except £19,000 when he comes collecting and the rest paid monthly at £500 a month for <3 years?

                    Correct.

Hard to say but I'm sure they will have to consider reasonable payment proposals.

Bear in mind, it could be 3 years or more before the appeals process is concluded.

The effect will be to claim back tax + interest for the past 8 years which in my case amounts to approximately £200,000.

find your local mp here : http://www.writetothem.com/

Send it today to my MP Bob Neill ....
