Rubbish, it's a bearable rate for an employee, not for a freelance.

There's actually a hell of a lot to complain about with the ICT system, as used by BT and Loyds, among others. IT skills are not on the list of occupations for which Tier2 visas can be obtained, hence there is no way to come into this country to work in IT unless you are an EU national. The ICT is meant to be used to transfer temporarily skilled specialist staff from within the parent company. It is not meant to be used to bring in mickey mouse coders to replace local workers (and since there are local workers, where is the skill shortage anyway?)

Plus such ICT workers must be paid local market rate for the role. What they actually get is a nominal salary back home, a living allownce here, and a bonus structure. They do not pay UK taxes nor contribute much of anything to the UK economy.

The whole thing is a complete pisstake and totally agaisnt the spirit and wording of the legisaltion. Anything we can do to get it stopped is to be welcomed.

Correct me if Im wrong, but this role is not for an IT project manager. Specifically it indicates that the ability to liaise with health practitioners is high on the requirements list.

Health specialists are able to easily obtain a visa to work here I believe.

As I said earlier, this is not a good example to use to complain about the abuse of the ICT system within the IT marketplace.

If you're the owner of a global company what would you do? Would you pay a UK mickey mouse coder for £300 per day or an Indian Goofy programmer for £50 per day(in India) or £100 per day if you ship him to the UK (shipping costs cut down the differential slightly but there's still a big profit). I've worked with some really really rubbish Indian developers. I've also worked with some pretty ropey UK developers and managers. If the natives kick up a fuss, you'd simply move more jobs to India to make up for any loss of profit you incur from having to employ UK guys where the job can't be moved.
It's globalisation folks. We're not out of work because we're rubbish. We're out of work because somebody else who may not be half as good as us costs 1/5th of what we do. There's no easy answer to this. We were only a lot richer once because we industrialised the first, communications were poor and it took the rest of the world a while to cotton on. Unless we come up with something equally as spectacular and keep it to ourselves, those days are gone.

Right, so we all pack up and go home. Well done.

          Sorry, not how I work.

I just dont see the point of clamping down on ICT's. Doing so will simply give companies even more reason to move jobs to India permanently and none of us will benefit from that.

The ICTs who are smart, and I've worked with a few, work out how to get permanent UK residency or move to a company who pays them a UK wage. It's basically immigration by the back door particularly when it involves single young men.

I think they prefer the women back home, they will go back to India to marry then when the wife gets her visa they come to the UK, start a family etc.

Not sure how they would survive with rates going south - their standard of living would only be slightly better than India.

If they could outsource these jobs they could have done that already. The reason to bring ICT's here is that these jobs require some cutomer input or business involvement which can't be done while sitting offshore. So clamping down on ICT will certainly help UK contractors

whats is annoying me even more is the fact local contractors are taking silly contractor rates. Companies are taking advantage of the current climate to cut rates, in a lot of cases by half...never in 12 years of contracting can I remember seeing jobs for PM's of a reasonably senior level paying £200 per day...!!!!!

We as a workforce should take a stand and REJECT any contract with silly rates. They would soon get the hint if they cant fill the roles and be forced to readjust rates....I appreciate there are a lot of people out of work but we are making a rod for our own backs which will take years to recorrect..
