    When banking stops being free

    Hi all,

I'm guessing most of you have got to the stage where business banking stops being free, or even has a monthly "maintenance" charge on an account.

Has anyone switched business accounts to one that's pretty much free? Was it a painless process or were there lots of annoyances like "meeting the manager"?

I just took a look at an application form for a business account with a high street bank and it was 12 pages of intrusive questions. I'm wondering whether it's worth switching or putting up with the charges

Abbey is "guaranteed free forever" how much that sort of guarantee is worth I don't know. Now that the website has been upgraded I recommend Abbey Business. HTH.

Im in the process of dumping abbey after the recent upgrade cockup. See thread on the forum somewhere. Couldnt get to my money for days after the, ahem, upgrade.

Im in the process of setting up an FSB Co Op free Business Banking acount instead.
I couldn't give two fornicators! Yes, really!

It is never worth putting up with bank charges or "VIP accounts" that charge a fee. If you are paying a bank charge for keeping your money with a bank then you are a mugged - monthly!

Business banks: Cater Allen, Co-op. Cater Allen is very good.
Main Personal Bank: First Direct, or Cater Allen

Cater Allen is excellent. Free banking (unless you're making some wacky amount of transactions a month). Direct Debit visa card (also free). Internet banking. And any time I've had to phone them up they've been professional, helpful and friendly. I'd recommend them to anyone.

P.S. I do not work for Cater Allen.

But they've had their cockup, you should be safe for a couple of years... any other bank might do something similar any time

That's my thinking too about Abbey. OK, it WAS a debacle, but it should prevent any more smart ideas happening there for a while.
