Even the chancellor has his nose firmly in the trough, switching between main homes so he can do up both at the taxpayers expense. It is frankly sickening to have these b*stards on our backs for doing no more than they do, ie following the letter of the law, rather than the much touted 'spirit' of the law, the 'intent' of parliament. Was it the intent of parliament to allow MP's to claim every f**ing item of homeware, decoration, entertainment, titillation, etc..etc.. etc.. (cant wait for the revelations to start flowing), on their home residence. Where is a bathplug required in the peformance of MP's duties (oh they dont have to prove that do they .. sorry).
as the Justice said when denying our Judicial Review, retrospection is allowed (in their twisted world view) when it's purpose is to affirm the intent of parliament, in that case why the f**k is it beyond the powers of parliament to get this money back from the freeloading tw*ts, using retrospection if necessary. THEY MAKE ME SICK......Last edited by poppy01; 6 April 2009, 10:16.Comment

I doubt they will, but at least we are keeping them busy.

Anyone who hasn't had a response from the Treasury after 4 weeks should send a reminder. Drop me a line if you want a "chase" letter.Comment

Watch ITV1 tonight
Taking on the Taxman: Tonight on ITV 1 from 8:00pm to 8:30pm
As the new tax year officially begins, Jonathan Maitland reports on what happens when Revenue & Customs gets it wrong. He speaks to taxpayers declared bankrupt in error and hears the stories of those forced into long, costly and stressful legal battles to overturn the taxman's mistakesComment

If we could get the Conservatives to commit to reversing the legislation, it would be worth hedging our bets and betting on Labour to win the next election.
Suppose you currently owe £100k. If you put £10k on Labour to win then at 9/1 that would return £100k, leaving you with £90k after you had paid the tax demand.
If the Conservatives win, then you would lose £10k, still leaving you with £90k.

Now if we all got together and spent 3 quid each in a Lottery syndicate, we could have an even better chance of getting the 100k each... I feel that £3 a week is way too much to be contemplating spending on anti-stupidity measures brought about by the unethical legislation known as BN66 though.Comment

Warning - overpaying tax
I am just about to submit a claim for a refund of overpaid tax in 2007/8. Having spoken to MontP, there is a chance that this will be declined on the grounds that money is owing in previous years ie. the closure notices.
This has not happened in all cases where clients have tried to claim a refund, and as is usual with HMRC, there is no consistency.
However, this is something to watch out for. If you do overpay tax, don't bank on getting it back.Comment

I thought it was worth repeating what I had written on ITcontractor.
If you are writing to your MP:
Ask them:
1. To sign the petition (provide a link for them).
2. Why they are allowed to claim anything and everything on expenses, but you the hard-working taxpayer have to prove everything is a business expense.
3. Why you are being penalised when you were acting "within the rules", but they aren't penalised.
4. How they would feel if they had to pay back their expenses retrospectively for the past 10 years.
P.S. sorry if I sound like a broken recordLast edited by SantaClaus; 6 April 2009, 23:58.'Orwell's 1984 was supposed to be a warning, not an instruction manual'. -
